Passports and Visas

 

You need a passport valid for at least 6 months after you intend leaving Mozambique. Visitors can be asked to provide proof of outgoing travel documents or sufficient funds to provide for their needs during their stay.

The law requires you to carry identification at all times and you may be asked to produce your documents by the police. Rather than carry original documents, make a copy of your passport and other important documents and have them notarized and store your original documents safely.

Citizens of all countries except Malawi, Mauritius and South Africa need an entry visa to visit Mozambique. Visas must be obtained at Mozambican diplomatic embassies and missions spread around the world before entering the country. Allow at least 7 days for this. Visas can be arranged at upon arrival, if necessary.

Currency

New Metical (MZN) is the official currency of Mozambique. It is subdivided into 100 centavos. If you are visiting to southern region of the country, U. S. dollars, Pounds Sterling, and South African Rand are also acceptable payment modes. In Tete, this is not the case. Credit cards are rarely used. Though there are approximately five Even the ATMs available in Tete they are often out of service.

The national airline is LAM-Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique. Chingodzi Airport, located just a 10 minute drive from Villa Habsburg is on the north-east side of the city and has a 2.4 km paved runway and has regular flight to the Capital city of Maputo and Johannesburg, South Africa with a stopover in Beira. The Chingodzi Airport has a restaurant, a small shop and several rental car facilities. Flights are frequently delayed or cancelled and baggage is often lost or tampered with.

Getting Around by Road

Traffic drives on the left. There are good road links with all neighboring countries except Tanzania. However, road travel can be dangerous and should only be undertaken in daylight. Hijacking and robberies are rife and travelers should be aware of the possibility of unexploded landmines on the lesser-used roads.There is a regular bus service from Maputo to Johannesburg, and there are good bus links to other South African cities.

Tarred roads connect Maputo with Beira and Beira with Tete. It is possible to travel by road in southern Mozambique though flood damage can cause serious delays. Driving after dark can be hazardous owing to vehicles traveling without headlights. Hijacking occurs. Seat belts are obligatory.

Cars can be hired from international and local agencies.

Health and Safety

Mozambique is a malaria area and necessary precautions should be taken when travelling to this country. Please consult your doctor before your trip. Please make sure you get all of your necessary vaccine shots before arrival in Mozambique.

Ways to prevent malaria include the following:

  • Taking a prescription antimalarial drug
  • Using insect repellent and wearing long pants and sleeves to prevent mosquito bites
  • Sleeping in air-conditioned or well-screened rooms or using bednets

We suggest that tap water in Mozambique is avoided. Bottled water is readily available and The local 2M beer is often less expensive than 250ml of bottled water!

Incidence of HIV/AIDS in Mozambique is typically high. Travel responsibly and take the necessary precautions to safe guard yourself.
